Porthmeor, a punchy beach break capable of long lefts and right-handers down the shore, is a favourable venue for Tour surfers looking to gain valuable points toward the prestigious year-end BPSA Championship Title, including Hot Tuna surfer Toby Atkins, who is currently sitting 2 nd in the rankings. Additionally, the event welcomes competitors of all ages and abilities with an assortment of amateur contests for both males and female entrants.
Divisions include Men’s Open, worth £3000 and Women’s Open, worth £500 which commence on Aug. 26 while U’16+U’12 Grommet Comps take place on Aug 27; as well as the FSO Money Move (yet to be decided), offering £250 for the best move over the entire weekend. All Finals are scheduled to start at 9 a.m on Aug 27.
With half the BPSA Tour complete, the Hot Tuna “Summer of ’69” Pro kick-starts a Tour period traditionally marked by increasingly bigger, better waves.
Currently leading the BPSA Men’s Tour is last year’s BPSA champion, Reubin Pearce, with Spencer Hargraves, one of the UK’s best-ever surfers and a veteran competitor, in the top 5.
In addition to surfing, spectators and athletes can expect to enjoy many beach-related activities at this seaside sporting venue and in the surf-stoked town of St. Ives. During the competition, Hot Tuna will be inviting all the surfers and families to enjoy a barbecue and complimentary beer courtesy of tour sponsor Fosters Lager, and a party at a venue to-be-confirmed is in the works.
ABOUT HOT TUNA (INTERNATIONAL) PLC (AIM:HTT): Hot Tuna was born in Australia in the summer of ’69 to serve the demands of sojourning surfers. Spreading on the backs, bums and boards of watermen through coastal locales in the South Pacific, the brand quickly burgeoned globally, becoming an influential leader in the nascent surf industry and one of the progenitors of the neon era of surf in the '80s. A long list of notables, in and out of the water, have waved the Hot Tuna banner at one time or another in their careers, from super models to pro surfers such as Richie Lovett, Robbie Page, Beau Emerton and Drew Courtney.
In a world that’s becoming increasingly homogenous in its offerings, Hot Tuna is renewing the excitement, expression and diversity that was born of the lifestyle it serves, balancing in fashion the extremes of gravity and levity in a day-in-the-life of world-traveling surfers.
With offices in London, Orange County in California, and in Sydney, Hot Tuna this season recommits itself to the brand’s history and roots in world travel, drawing from global fashion and surf-cultural inspirations, emphasizing '60s, '70s and '80s treatments, and infusing in every thread of clothing the timeless values that the iconic Piranha logo has come to embody: authenticity, creativity and good times.
